Creating and managing Categories and Menus
With our fully customisable store, you can create and manage your categories directly from the Items
section. You’re invited to title and describe the categories (which are SEO-friendly as we covered in series #3), much like how you would with your product listings. Creating categories and organizing your menu items makes it super easy for your buyers to purchase from you.
Remember this selling mantra: easy-to-navigate stores = easy shopping decisions for your audience.
1) Brainstorm your categories.
Take a minute to jot down the different ways your products could be divided up. Perhaps by product type: physical, digital, or service. Maybe you want to organize by theme, collection, or designer. No matter how your items are categorized, it’s good to remember this process will look different for every brand.
We see digital products typically divided by content or theme. If you don’t have any themes, brainstorm different options with your target buyers in mind. What would make sense to them? What words do they use a lot? What does your business do for them? For example, if you are a wellness coach, you likely have guides, coaching, and ebooks. For example, you could categorize them into Services, eBooks and 6-Week Plans.
2) Create your categories.
Now for the fun part! Creating categories is a pretty simple process.
- Head over to your Selz dashboard and click on ‘Items’ then ‘Categories’.
- Then, create a new category by clicking on ‘New category’.
- Add a name, description and meta description for your new category.
- You’ll also want to add the appropriate existing products to the category from this page.
- The name and description of the category will display on the category page and the items chosen will sit within the chosen category on your store:
3) Create Your Main Menu and Footer Menu.
Now that your items are organized into categories, we need to make it super easy for your customers to navigate them. We do this by putting a link to your categories in the menu. You can access the navigation management by select Store > Pages & Menus
Your default Main Menu will look something like this:
Here’s what it looks like in the settings:
We want something that’s a bit more organized and clear, so we’re going to add our categories to the Main Menu. Turn off the ‘Categories’ page and turn on each ‘Category’ page.

If you want to adjust your Footer Menu, follow the same steps, but be sure to select the ‘Footer Menu’ from the dropdown section of your design panel.
Have a think about what you want in your head and footer menus and play around to see what works for you. Some businesses put different links in the footer menu than the main menu. Some include a direct email address for customer support, like Amanda Bisk:
